Will Galbraith run for Governor?

One of the names most often listed as a potential Democratic candidates for Governor next year is Peter Galbraith, a resident of Townshend and the former United States Ambassador to Croatia. But don’t expect any decision from Galbraith soon: he’s traveling in Iraq right now, and his friends say he’s not likely to make an announcement anytime soon.

The 56-year-old son of the late John Kenneth Galbraith, a world famous economist who held posts in the administrations of Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. Peter Galbraith worked for the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee and was the United Nations Ambassador in East Timor. He is the author of

The End of Iraq: How American Incompetence Created a War Without End.

Democrats say the two front runners for the gubernatorial nomination are State Senators John Campbell and Douglas Racine, and few insiders really expect Galbraith to enter the race. Still, it might be interesting to view the contrast between Gailbraith, whose main experience and focus has been on foreign policy, and Republican Governor Jim Douglas, who has spent 35 years holding state office in Vermont.
