Leahy on Appropriations chairmanship: 'Frosting on the cake'

Patrick Leahy: Getty Images PhotoWCAX-TV/Channel 3 out of Burlington is reporting a conversation with Vermont's senior U.S. senator, Patrick Leahy (D-Middlesex). Several weeks ago, we reported on the possibility that Leahy, who currently chairs the Judiciary Committee, could rise to the chairmanship of the powerful Appropriations Committee, currently chaired by U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd, the aging West Virginia Democrat.

At the time, Leahy wasn't saying much on the matter. Now it seems the senator is ready to ponder becoming the chief of committee that controls federal purse strings.

"If I was chairman of the Appropriations Committee it would be frosting on the cake," Leahy said.

Leahy's openness is rare for any politician, especially one of Leahy's standing and skill. Perhaps he feels confident enough that the position is likely to be his.
