Progressives nudge Democrats on campaign finance

The Progressive Party is accusing Democrats of giving in to Governor Douglas “just a bit” on campaign finance.

In a weekly newsletter sent out to supporters, Progressive Reps. Susan Hatch Davis,  Sarah Edwards, Sandy Haas, Chris Pearson, Dexter Randall, and David Zuckerman write:

“After weeks of testimony, in what can only be described as an instant-replay of last year's work, House Government Operations sent a strong campaign finance bill to the floor.  But not before Democrats gave into the Governor just a bit.

“Like last year, the bill establishes reasonable limits on what campaigns can accept from individuals, PACs, and political parties. The committee, against Rep. Pearson's vote, decided to extend the $1,000 limit to all statewide candidates.  When the bill came from the Senate, the limit for Lt. Governor on down was $750. Thankfully, the committee wasn't interested in considering the Governor's other proposal that would have permitted unlimited donations from the state party to candidates.”
