Symington makes it official: She's stepping down as speaker

Vermont House Speaker Gaye Symington (D) made it official Saturday as she closed the legislative session: She will not be returning to the House.

With that move, it is looking more and more likely that Symington will announce a bid to challenge Gov. Jim Douglas (R). Speculation continues as to who will replace Symington. Look for the Democratic caucus to make a shift away from current leadership. There's been much discontent within the caucus over the current leadership's legislative record, all despite having a large majority.

A veto session is planned for June 26. We should see heavy politicking among House members in the interim.
