Kunin: Galbraith 'stronger' challenger than Pollina

Former Democratic Governor Madeleine Kunin believes that Democrat Peter Galbraith would pose a stronger challenge to Republican Governor Jim Douglas than would Progressive Anthony Pollina, she told PolitickerVT.com Monday.

“I see (Galbraith) as a stronger challenger than Anthony Pollina,” she said.

Kunin, who served as Governor of Vermont for three terms before serving three years as Ambassador to Switzerland, said she would be waiting for a Democratic candidate to enter the race before making an endorsement.

Earlier today, former Democratic Governor Philip Hoff, the last challenger to defeat an incumbent Vermont governor, announced his support for Pollina and said that Democrats should throw their support behind his candidacy.

Pollina is the sole announced challenger to Douglas. Galbraith, an author and longtime diplomat, has indicated he will make a decision on whether to enter the race soon.

Kunin said she believed Galbraith would be the strongest Democratic contender.

“The best possibility would be Peter Galbraith,” she said.
